Appeal for support for Leeds Get Organised
Dear friend,
We have all seen the fantastic work Sheffield Needs a Pay rise has been doing – sorely needed in the current economic climate.
I’m very proud and excited to let you know that on May Day 2021 Leeds Trades Council will officially launch “Leeds Get Organised” – in partnership with the BFAWU and the backing of all Leeds trades unions and the regional TUC.
We have agreed to fund a full time organiser with the BFAWU who will be the catalyst for the transformation of our ability to organise Labour in Leeds.
We have experienced an unparalleled level of demand from workers feeling incredibly isolated and vulnerable in the workplace under Covid and we have seen what a difference having that organiser has made in Sheffield.
We can do so much here with that extra resource and with your help and support. We can put an organiser in field to help our low wage, precarious workers get unionised.
The BFAWU will manage, train and pay for half of the organiser however they will work organising across the whole trade union movement in Leeds. Using new innovative organising strategies and enhancing the good name of trade unions.
Leeds TUC needs to raise the other half of the money – £14,367.34
I am writing to ask you to help in three ways:
1 Pass this motion of support at your Union branch or CLP – we can send a speaker to your meeting if you would like to know more.
2 Send a donation to fund a full time organiser (Please send a cheque made out to ‘Leeds TUC’ to our PO Box or pay via BACS, Account number 59102522 Sort code 60-83-01. Please remember to include your branch name in the reference.)
3 Get involved in Leeds TUC and come to May Day 2021 on Saturday May 1st outside Leeds Art Gallery at 12 noon to hear how you can get involved in this important campaign.
Leeds Trades council has helped to organise Working people in Leeds for well over 100 years to great effect. With rapidly rising unemployment, the highest level of workplace deaths for decades and the Tories clear intention to make public sector workers pay for the Covid crisis – we need to get people organised.
The support we have received already from across the movement has been incredible – I know that you will want to help and I can’t wait to for you to get involved.
Together we can get Leeds organised and take the fight to the bad bosses and the corporations who exploit our people.
Together we can win!
